This week’s Top Comics to Buy for May 22, 2024 has a couple of superhero comics that I really liked, with the DC Comics – Black Label books about The Bat-Man and John Constantine. Moreover, you’ll also notice quite a few superhero books in the second section. Not sure what’s going on but seemed like a strong week for the capes stuff. As always, you can find my full set of recommendations below … enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for May 22, 2024

bat-man the first knightThe Bat-Man First Knight #3
Writer: Dan Jurgens
Artist: Mike Perkins
Colorist: Mike Spicer
Letterer: Simon Bowland
Publisher: DC Comics – Black Label
As the Voice’s grip on Gotham tightens, Jim Gordon doesn’t know whom he can trust. With monstrous beasts threatening the city, he turns to the Bat-Man for help, but to truly stop this reign of terror, playboy millionaire Bruce Wayne will step in to help guide the investigation. It all leads to a heart-pounding conclusion that will literally set Gotham ablaze!
Why It’s Cool:
This three-part prestige series comes to an end this week, and throughout it has had some of the best period fiction artwork I’ve seen in a comic in a good while. Add to that an interesting angle about the time Batman was created, and it’s a book I heartily recommend.

comics to buy for may 22Cobra Commander #5
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Andrea Milana
Colorist: Annalisa Leoni
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Publisher: Image Comics – Skybound
Mini-Series Finale. The Rise of Cobra Commander! To build an army, Cobra Commander makes a deal with a powerful ally that can’t be trusted. Now that’s its started, can the Cobra Threat ever be stopped?
Why It’s Cool:
It’s always nice when a plan comes together — and in this miniseries, that’s certainly what happened. The creative team in this well-done book have expertly brought together a major pillar of the new shared Transformers-G.I. Joe Universe, and it’s fun to watch it happen.

comics to buy for may 22The Forged #8
Writers: Greg Rucka and Eric Trautmann
Artist: Mike Henderson
Colorist: Nolan Woodard
Letterer: Ariana Maher

Vic is MIA and the mantle of leading Scimitar-3 falls to CrazyJo… if she doesn’t crack first. At Court, Davian unravels intrigue as the Empress makes her own moves. Is she as erratic as she seems?
Why It’s Cool:
This is gorgeous sci-fi comics storytelling of the highest order. This book looks fantastic — from Mike Henderson’s linework to Nolan Woodard’s colors — and now that we’ve gotten to know our characters, I’m just totally into this one, hanging on every plot development and every new idea it throws out. This series is a must-read.

comics to buy for may 22John Constantine – Hellblazer: Dead in America #5
Writers: Simon Spurrier and Aaron Campbell
Artists: Aaron Campbell, Kelsey Ramsay, John Pearson, and John McCrea
Colorists: Jordie Bellaire, Francesco Segala, and Mike Spicer
Letterers: Aditya Bidikar and Steve Wands
Publisher: DC Comics – Black Label
John Constantine, his son Noah, and bodyguard Nat have been blazing a trail across the face of America in their double-decker Routemaster bus, finding themselves on the wrong end of an eruption of supernatural and mystical threats–all thanks to a scattering of Dream’s sand. In this anthology-format issue, three particularly memorable run-ins with hitchhikers and drifters on America’s roadsides come to the fore…but can Constantine add up their meaning in time to uncover who–or what–is to blame for this rise in terror?
Why It’s Cool:
I haven’t been shy about praising this book, which is my favorite superhero comic right now (to the extent you can even call it a superhero comic). Every issue is just so good, a satisfying read on its own as well as additive to a bigger narrative. It’s the type of book that reminds you why you love reading monthly comics.

Man’s Best #3
Writer: Pornsak Pichetshote
Artist: Jesse Lonergan
Letterer: Jeff Powell
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
In the middle chapter of the epic space adventure featuring 3 animal best friends on a quest to save the earth, the splendor of the planet does little to comfort Athos as they feel at fault for the recent tragedy in the midst of searching for their missing comrade. And as they enter a new psychic realm and literally form a much deeper connection than before, what challenges and new discoveries lie ahead as they continue their desperate mission?
Why It’s Cool:
I’ll be honest here — I’ve gotten a little burned out on “talking pets” comics (there have been a lot lately), but this one is so good that’s it able to transcend my burn out and land here all the same. In large part this is due to the excellent and immersive nature of Jesse Lonergan’s art. The book is great all around, but this is a must-read based on the quality of art alone — it’s that good.
